YORK COUNTY — A Grafton Middle School student was charged with Possession of a Firearm on School Property Friday after a handgun was found in his bag.
According to the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office, at approximately 11 a.m. Friday morning, Grafton High School administrators were notified by students that a 13-year-old male Grafton Middle School student was in possession of a handgun. The school principal contacted the Sheriff’s Office School Resource Officer, and the two of them located the student in the building.
A semi-automatic pistol was found in a small bag that the student had been wearing around his neck, the sheriff’s office said. The pistol was not loaded and there was no ammunition found in the bag or on the student.
The student was taken into custody and has been charged with Possession of a Firearm on School Property — a felony.
The student is in custody at the Merrimac Detention Center, the sheriff’s office said.
