YORK COUNTY — Several schools in York County received identical robocall voicemail messages Friday morning reporting a bomb threat, authorities said.
The calls were reported to the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office by school officials. The Sheriff’s Office determined the messages were a form of “swatting,” a false report designed to trigger an emergency response.
Deputies visited all 19 schools to conduct precautionary protective sweeps and found no evidence of a threat. An increased law enforcement presence remains at school campuses as a precaution. Schools are continuing normal operations.
School divisions across the country have experienced a recent rise in similar calls over the past week, authorities said.
The Sheriff’s Office said threats, even when not credible, can be unsettling for students and families and that all reported threats are investigated. The office encouraged families and students to report any suspicious activity or concerns to law enforcement.
