WILLIAMSBURG— Providence Classical School has appointed Robert “Bobby” Knowles as its next head of school, effective July 1.

Knowles was selected following a nationwide search that attracted candidates from across the region and country. After an initial screening and interviews conducted by the Head of School Search Committee, four candidates were advanced to the school’s board of directors. The board narrowed the field to three finalists before selecting Knowles.

Knowles, a longtime Williamsburg resident, brings 29 years of experience in education, including 17 years in the classroom and 12 years in administrative leadership roles as an assistant principal and principal. He holds a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Clemson University and a master’s degree in educational policy, planning and leadership from William & Mary. He is endorsed in K-12 school administration.

Board President Rita Stryker said the board was grateful for the guidance it received during the search process.

“Bobby’s depth of instructional and administrative experience, combined with his heart for Christ-centered education and his strong ties to our community, uniquely position him to lead Providence faithfully into its next chapter,” Stryker said.

Knowles is an active member of Williamsburg Community Chapel, where he served for 10 years as recreation director for Vacation Bible School and completed training as a Stephen Minister. He is also active in the local swim community, having coached summer swim teams and year-round competitive swimming programs.

After nearly three decades in public education, Knowles said he believes he is called to serve in classical Christian education. He said his introduction to the classical model renewed his enthusiasm for the formative power of a Christ-centered education.

“Education is a calling,” Knowles said. “Through my exploration of classical Christian education, I experienced many ‘aha’ moments — recognizing that this model answers what has often been missing in modern educational approaches. I am honored and humbled to serve Providence Classical School and look forward to partnering with faculty, families and the board to cultivate a Christ-centered environment where students pursue truth, wisdom and virtue.”
