HISTORIC TRIANGLE — Residents and business owners alike can register for upcoming Citizen Police Academy classes at both the James City County Police Department and the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office.
James City County Citizen’s Police Academy
The James City County Police Department is currently accepting applications for the 55th Citizen Police Academy class. The class is limited to 20 participants and will begin on Feb. 12.
The Citizens Police Academy, established in 1995 by former Chief of Police David A. Daigneault, aims to foster better understanding and communication between citizens and law enforcement, according to the county. Participants engage in a diverse curriculum covering various aspects of police work, including Department Philosophy and Organization, Uniform Patrol, Communications, Community Services and more.
The 12-week course runs from Feb. 12 to May 7 on Wednesday evenings from 7-9 p.m. Students will also have one Saturday class when the group will participate in activities at the James City County Police firing range. Classes will take place at James City County Police headquarters.
The academy is open to residents and business owners in James City County. Applications are available online and must be received by the department by Jan. 20.
York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office Business Academy
The York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office is accepting applications for its newly launched Business Academy set to begin on Feb. 4.
The York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Business Academy is a free program designed to give businesses of York County and the City of Poquoson a better understanding of the crime prevention resources available to them. The seven-week course of instruction is geared towards business owners, managers, faith-based organizations, and anyone who has an invested interest in the day-to-day operating safety and security of their business, according to officials.
The curriculum will cover robbery prevention, workplace violence, white-collar crimes, patrol techniques, site surveys, and the business watch program.
The seven-week academy will take place at York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office headquarters and will run on Tuesday evenings from 7-9 p.m. The academy is free and open to all businesses in York County and the City of Poquoson.
