NEWPORT NEWS — Junior defensive back Eli Sherfield and sophomore running back Jordin Lennon enjoyed big nights under the lights Friday night in Christopher Newport’s 70-31 season-ending football victory over the College of New Jersey. Monday, they both received recognition from the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) for their efforts. Sherfield, from Woodbridge, Va., was named the Defensive Player of the Week. Lennon, a native of Yorktown, Va., was picked as the Offensive Player of the Week.
Sherfield picked off three passes in the victory at TowneBank Stadium, and compiled 69 yards in returns following the interceptions, including a 59-yard return. He also registered a tackle and broke up a pass. Sherfield ended the year with five total interceptions, tied for the lead in the NJAC.
Lennon, meanwhile, scored four touchdowns and rushed for 234 yards on 15 carries, averaging 15.6 yards per carry for the Captains. He scored on runs of 50, 6, 7, and 64 yards, and his 234 yard total was the fifth-highest single game rushing total in CNU program history. Lennon finished the year as CNU’s top rusher with 701 yards, and it marked the second NJAC Offensive Player of the Week accolade for the transfer from Norfolk State University.
Christopher Newport scored ten touchdowns against the Lions on 12 total possessions in the game. The Friday night victory gave the Captains a 7-3 final overall record, and a 5-1 mark in the NJAC. Pal Crowley’s team won its final five games of the season.
