
WILLIAMSBURG — William & Mary women’s tennis continued its winning ways on day two of the Hall of Fame Hidden Dual at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon. Facing players from ACC foe Virginia Tech and defending Sun Belt Champion Old Dominion, the Tribe won two of three doubles matches and five of its seven singles contests.
Over the two-day event, the Tribe has gone a combined 5-2 in doubles, led by the 2-0 mark of junior Emma Pell and sophomore Francesca Davis. In singles action, W&M is 11-5 with Davis, junior Yaelle Vaissaud, and freshman Mira Kernagis going 2-0.
Seniors Alessandra Anghel and Ine Stange picked up a 6-4 win over the ODU team of Lidiia Rasskouskaia and Victoria Matasova at the top spot. The Tribe tandem is 7-4 over the last two seasons.
For the second-straight day, Davis and Pell were dominant as a pair. They dropped just one game in rolling to a 6-1 win over Virginia Tech’s Michaela Hegarty and Charlotte Cartledge.
The Tribe trio of Davis, Kernagis and Vaissaud remained undefeated during the fall season with singles victories on Saturday. Davis moved to 5-0 on the year with a 6-2, 7-5 win over ODU’s Victoria Matasova. Kernagis also pushed her mark to 5-0, but needed three sets, rallying for a win over Ulyana Romanova of ODU, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4. Vaissaud dropped just two total games in a 6-2, 6-0 win over Virginia Tech’s Michaela Hegarty to improve to 2-0.
Anghel and junior Sia Chaudry each rallied for singles wins on Saturday. After dropping the opening set to ODU’s Lidiia Rasskouskaia, 6-4, Anghel stormed back to win the second, 7-5, and led 2-0 in the third when the Monarch player retired. She upped her record to 3-2 on the year.
Chaudry rallied from a set deficit by winning the second in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (6), over Virginia Tech’s Charlotte Cartledge. She rolled in the third set, 6-2, for her first win as a member of the Tribe.

W&M Women’s Tennis Turns in Strong Day 1 at Hall of Fame Hidden Duals
In doubles action, two Green and Gold doubles pairs notched their first wins while playing together for the first time. Teaming for the first time, Fernald and Kernagis topped the UNC team of Susanna Maltby and Alana Boyce, 6-4. Davis and junior Emma Pell dropped just one game in a 6-1 win over ECU’s Joan Madi and Isabella Rivera in their first time as a team. Vaissaud and sophomore Parker Debnam improved 4-1 over the last two seasons as a team with a 6-2 victory over ECU’s Lilly Lancaster and Anne Lou Champion.
In singles, senior Hedda Gurholt picked up her 75th career win. She topped ECU’s Ines Bachir in straight sets, 7-6 (5), 7-5, at the top spot. Gurholt improved to 3-2 on the year.
Davis and Kernagis remained undefeated in singles action during the fall with victories over ECU opponents. Davis won matching 6-3 sets over Xenia Jeromin, while Kernagis dropped just three total games in a 6-3, 6-0 win over Lancaster. Both Tribe players are 4-0 so far this year.
Senior Ine Stange and Fernald both improved to 3-1 on the fall with three-set wins. Stange out-lasted UNC’s Alana Boyce, 7-6 (4), 4-6, 7-5, and Fernald upended ECU’s Joan Madi, 6-2, 3-6, 7-5.
Vaissaud notched her first win of the fall in convincing fashion. She rolled over ECU’s Brooke La Frenz, 6-0, 6-2.
