STONY BROOK, N.Y. — William & Mary put four players in doubles figures, but a hot start lifted Stony Brook to a 75-62 win over Saturday afternoon on Long Island.
Sophomore Trey Moss led the Tribe (8-21, 3-13 CAA) in scoring for the fifth time in the last six games with 16 points to go along with four assists. Junior Gabe Dorsey scored 12 of his 15 points in the second half. With his three 3-pointers, Dorsey moved into third on the Tribe’s single-season 3-pointers made list.
Junior Caleb Dorsey just missed a double-double with 14 points and eight rebounds, while graduate student Sean Houpt rounded out the double-digit scorers with 11 in his return to the starting lineup.
Stony Brook (16-13, 9-7 CAA) hit 12 of its first 19 shots from the floor and connected at a 50% clip in the opening half to take as much as a 15-point advantage in the first 20 minutes. Aaron Clarke and Tyler Stephenson-Moore led Stony Brook with 18 points apiece.
After the Tribe scored the opening bucket, the Seawolves scored 11-straight points to take control. Stephen-Moore netted five during the run, while Keenan Fitzmorris added four, including a bucket in the paint to extend the lead to 11-2 at the 13:30 mark.
The Stony Brook advantage reached double-digits, 17-7, on a Dean Noll driving lay-up with 10:45 left in the opening half.
The Tribe scored five in a row to close within 17-12 on a Moss 3-pointer just two minutes later.
Behind another 11-2 run, Stony Brook’s lead ballooned to 31-16 on Fitzmorris jumper. Clarke tallied six during the spurt, and the Seawolves led by 12 at the break.
W&M closed to within eight points less than three minutes into the second half thanks to Gabe Dorsey. The junior sharpshooter knocked down a 3-pointer and then hit three free throws after being fouled on another to narrow the margin to 39-31.
The lead jumped back to 14, 51-37, on a deep 3-pointer from Jared Frey and reach as much as 16, 61-45, on a Stephenson-Moore 3-pointer with 5:36 left.
The Tribe mounted a final rally with a 9-2 run. A Moss 3-pointer with 1:48 left cut the deficit to 65-57, but SBU hit its final 12 free throws over the last two minutes to put the game away.
Stony Brook finished the contest shooting 48.1% and hit 20-of-22 (90.9%) at the free throw line. On the other side, W&M shot just 29% for the game. The Tribe pulled down 13 offensive rebounds, knocked down nine 3-pointers and shot 86.7% (13-of-15) at the free throw line.
