YORK COUNTY — Virginia State Police are investigating a single-vehicle accident that claimed the life of a man on Interstate 64 Friday evening at the Route 199/Humelsine Parkway exit in York County.
On the evening of Oct. 20 at approximately 6:36 p.m., the state police said it responded to a single-vehicle crash on I-64 eastbound at the 242A exit.
Police said its preliminary investigations reveal that the driver and sole occupant of a 2017 Ford Explorer, 48-year-old John Michael Gifford of Mechanicsville, was traveling too fast for conditions, lost control of the vehicle and ran off the roadway, striking a tree head-on.
The driver died on impact. Alcohol is not considered a contributing factor and he was wearing his safety belt at the time of the crash, police said.
