WILLIAMSBURG — William & Mary men’s soccer head coach Chris Norris announced the addition of local product, freshman midfielder Peyton Smith (Williamsburg, Va. / Jamestown) to the Tribe roster for the 2023 season.
“We are thrilled to have Peyton join us,” Norris said. “I have had the pleasure of coaching Peyton with VA Reign FC and VA Legacy SC. Peyton is an extremely intelligent and reliable player. As a deeper lying midfielder, Peyton reads the game very well and breaks up opposition play consistently. In possession, Peyton scans effectively, understands the big picture and is very composed in buildup play. Peyton will provide critical depth in midfield.”
Smith helped lead Jamestown to a 2023 VHSL Class 4 Boys Soccer Championship. He earned All-State, All-District, All-Region and All-Tidewater First Team honors as a senior. He totaled four goals and nine assists last season for the Eagles and was a team captain for the program in both 2022 and 2023.
Smith has earned All-District and All-Region First Team honors each of the last two seasons. He finished high school career with six goals and 21 assists. On the club level, Smith won four Virginia State Cup Championships competing with Virginia Legacy and VA Reign FC and added two Virginia ECNL-RL Championships with VA Reign FC.
Smith is a bit of a legacy at William & Mary with his mother (Alisa Smith ’98), aunt (Jennifer Smith ’00) and uncle (Rob Jones ’00) all graduating from W&M. His father, Ryan Smith, ran track and cross country for two years at East Carolina, while his uncle, Rob Jones, played baseball for four years at W&M.
The Tribe kicks off the 2023 season when it hosts Binghamton on Thursday, Aug. 24. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field, and the game will be broadcast on FloFC.
