JAMES CITY COUNTY — James City County Police provided aid to U.S. Park Rangers in response to a pair of motorcycle crashes that occurred simultaneously on the Colonial Parkway and claimed the life of one rider July 7.

Upon arrival at the scene at approximately 8:20 p.m., the police determined with the aid of witnesses that two solo-riding motorcyclists within a group of eight entered a turn at high speeds, exited the roadway, and crashed into a wooded area.

Both motorcyclists required immediate medical attention, police said. The first, Quentin Perkins, a 20-year-old active-duty U.S. Navy service member from New Jersey, was pronounced dead at the scene by James City County Medics. The second sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Riverside Regional Hospital for treatment.

The group of riders traveled from York County to James City County on the Colonial Parkway prior to the accidents, police said. Multiple witnesses reported reckless driving by motorcyclists. Initial findings indicate that neither alcohol nor drugs played a role in the crashes.

The Colonial Parkway near the Jamestown Settlement remained closed for approximately three hours after the incident, according to police.

The crashes are still under investigation.
