WILLIAMSBURG — A group of students in the Lafayette High School chapter of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) were recently rewarded with a silver medal at the FCCLA state leadership conference for their STAR (Students Taking Action with Recognition) service project display.

The student’s service project focused mainly on senior loneliness. The Lafayette students shared their musical interests, played games, and created arts and crafts alongside residents at a local senior living community.

Through their efforts, the students gained insight into leadership, social, and organizational skills. In turn, the seniors got to share their personal history, as well as the history of the local area.

Roberta Lanham, a Lafayette High School teacher said, “The best part is that students realize that getting out into the community, even though they don’t get a monetary reward, is a valuable experience. “
