JAMES CITY COUNTY — A James City County police officer was indicted Wednesday on multiple charges stemming from a non-work-related incident in March.

Caleb Crawford, who has served the James City County Police Department (JCCPD) as an officer since August 2021, was indicted on charges of Malicious Wounding, Child Abuse, and Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor the department said in an official statement Friday to address the criminal investigation.

JCCPD said James City County Child Protective Services notified it of injuries to a child related to Crawford on March 26, and Chief Mark Jamison immediately notified and requested the Virginia State Police investigate the non-work-related matter. Crawford was not scheduled to work on March 26, 27, and 28 and was placed on administrative leave on March 29, pending the resolution of the legal process or the conclusion of an internal investigation, it added.

The department said it will continue to cooperate fully with the Virginia State Police and other investigative authorities involved in the case.
