Gweedo Giving Scholarship, Gweedo Memorial Foundation Scholarship Awarded

YORKTOWN — The Gweedo Memorial Foundation announced the second of its scholarships was awarded on Aug. 12 when Hung Lam was announced as the winner of the second annual Gweedo Giving scholarship in Roanoke.

Hung volunteered more than 200 hours to various charities and was an athlete on the high school football team. He graduated from William Fleming High School with a 4.3 GPA and is attending the University of Virginia, majoring in Computer Science.
Earlier this summer, Emma Ogden of Forest was announced as the fourth winner of the Gweedo Memorial Foundation scholarship during the Youth of Virginia Speak Out About Traffic Safety (YOVASO) awards banquet at James Madison University in July.

Ogden graduated from Jefferson Forest High School in Forest with a 3.8 GPA and is attending Shenandoah University, majoring in History. Emma was a seven-year member of YOVASO and active in the school’s theater program.

Conner Guido, 16, was one of three boys from Tabb High School who died in a car crash on Oct. 26, 2019. The Gweedo Memorial Foundation was established after his death to educate new teenage drivers and their parents on safe driving practices. Two annual scholarships are given out each year in Conner’s honor.

Conner’s mother, Tammy Gweedo McGee, has since sponsored two bills that have passed the Virginia General Assembly and has a third bill sponsored for the 2024 Virginia session. Conner’s first bill from 2021, House Bill 1918, is slated to be carried in the South Carolina General Assembly in 2024, the foundation said.
McGee has also partnered with YOVASO, VCU Project Impact, Drive SmartVA, Impact Teen Drivers, DriveSafeHR, We Save Lives and The National Distracted Driving Coalition along with local and governmental agencies in efforts to end teenage driving fatalities and distracted driving.
