JAMES CITY COUNTY — The Center for Digital Government (CDG) and the National Association of Counties (NACo) recently announced James City County as a winner of its 20th annual Digital Counties Survey, the county announced.
James City County ranked fourth nationally among its population category, up to 150,000.
According to the county, the survey is conducted by CDG in partnership with NACo and identifies the best technology practices among U.S. counties. This includes initiatives that streamline the delivery of government services; provide data analytics to allow decisions based on performance and outcomes; enhance cybersecurity; and apply innovative and emerging technologies to county priorities.
“Utilizing data for decision making, preparing for unexpected events and providing effective services through innovation is our focus,” said Patrick Page, Director of James City County Information Resources Management. “The use of modern technologies, methods, and procedures allows us to serve our citizens effectively.”
James City County said its department of Information Resources Management enhanced and introduced several new initiatives that led to the recognition:
- Developing data-driven business intelligence utilizing 911 calls for service data and Geographic Information System maps to determine the best location for the next fire station and improve the response to citizens in need.
- Developing cybersecurity policies, plans, procedures, and training to be prepared for any event.
- Adding Chatbot technology to the county’s website to answer questions directly from citizens that resulted in an 82% customer resolution rate.
“This year’s survey results highlight how counties continue to use digital tools to respond to top priorities by providing comprehensive access to services, expanding opportunities for economic development, and ensuring the ability to be resilient in the face of unexpected crisis,” said Todd Sander, vice-president, CDG. “The Center for Digital Government is excited to recognize and congratulate this year’s winners for their accomplishments and continuing efforts to use technology to make government better.”
