Kirsten Flannigan named to Wofford College’s spring 2023 Dean’s List

Kirsten Flannigan has been named to the spring 2023 Dean’s List. Flannigan is from Toano.

To be named to the Dean’s List, a student must be enrolled for at least 12 semester hours of graded courses and attain a semester grade point average of 3.6 or higher.

Hannah Proctor of Williamsburg named to Dean’s List at Grove City College

Hannah Proctor, a Computer Science major at Grove City College from Williamsburg, has been named to the Dean’s List with High Distinction for the Fall 2022 semester. Hannah is a 2022 homeschool graduate and is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Proctor (Raquel) from Williamsburg.

Students eligible for the Dean’s List have a GPA of 3.40 to 3.59; for the Dean’s List with Distinction a GPA of 3.60 to 3.84 and for the Dean’s List with High Distinction a GPA of 3.85 to 4.0.

Yorktown Resident Rashad Stepney Named to Worcester Polytechnic Institute’s Spring 2023 Dean’s List

Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) has announced that Rashad Stepney, a member of the class of 2025 majoring in Aerospace Engineering, was named to the university’s Dean’s List for academic excellence for the spring 2023 semester.

A total of 2,054 undergraduate students achieved the criteria required for WPI’s spring 2023 Dean’s List. The criteria for the WPI Dean’s List differs from that of most other universities as WPI does not compute a grade point average (GPA). Instead, WPI defines the Dean’s List by the amount of work completed at the A level in courses and projects.

Katharine Artery of Toano Among University of Scranton Graduate Class of 2023

Katharine Artery of Toano was among the more than 500 graduates who earned master’s and doctoral degrees at The University of Scranton. Degrees were presented at its graduate commencement ceremony on May 21 at the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza, Wilkes-Barre. Degrees were conferred to graduates who had completed their academic degree requirements in August and December of 2022, as well as January and May of 2023.

Artery earned a Master of Accountancy degree in accountancy from The University of Scranton.

Thomas Wood Earns Dean’s List Honor at Lee University

Lee University congratulated Thomas Wood of Williamsburg on earning Dean’s List honors during the Spring 2023 semester.

Dean’s List recognition is earned by full-time, undergraduate students with a semester grade point average between 3.7 and 4.00.

Jessica Avgolaus Inducted into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi

Jessica Avgolaus of Williamsburg was recently initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective all-discipline collegiate honor society. Avgolaus was initiated at Old Dominion University. Avgolaus is among approximately 25,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni to be initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year. Membership is by invitation only and requires nomination and approval by a chapter.

Madison Damian Inducted into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi

Madison Damian of Williamsburg was recently initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective all-discipline collegiate honor society. Damian was initiated at the University of Delaware.

Gabrielle Kinney Inducted into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi

Gabrielle Kinney of Williamsburg was recently initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective all-discipline collegiate honor society. Kinney was initiated at Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University.

Local Students Named to Bridgewater College’s Spring 2023 Dean’s List

Approximately 530 students were named to the Dean’s List for the 2023 spring semester at Bridgewater College, Provost and Executive Vice President Dr. Leona A. Sevick announced.

Students on the Dean’s List have attained a 3.4 or better grade point average out of a possible 4.0. Area students named include:

SNHU Announces Winter 2023 Dean’s List

Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) congratulated the following students on being named to the Winter 2023 Dean’s List.

  • Madeline Poole of Williamsburg

Full-time undergraduate students who have earned a minimum grade-point average of 3.500 to 3.699 for the reporting term are named to the Dean’s List. Full-time status is achieved by earning 12 credits over each 16-week term or paired 8-week terms grouped in fall, winter/spring, and summer.

Athena Lansdell Achieves Spring 2023 Dean’s List at Belmont University

Athena Lansdell of Toano qualified for Belmont University’s Spring 2023 Dean’s List. Approximately 49 percent of Belmont’s 6,552 undergraduate students were named.

Dean’s List eligibility is based on a minimum course load of 12 hours and a quality grade point average of 3.5 with no grade below a C.

Ashlynn Lussier of Yorktown recognized during The University of Alabama Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities Conference

Ashlynn Lussier of Yorktown was recently recognized during The University of Alabama Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities (URCA) Conference.

Lussier received second place for a presentation entitled “The Power of Privilege: An Analysis of Executive Privilege in the Early Republic” in the Fine Arts & Humanities category.

Clement Patterson of Yorktown graduates from the University of Georgia

Clement Lowell Patterson was among the more than 7,000 candidates for graduation in the University of Georgia’s Class of 2023.

Patterson, of Yorktown was a candidate for a BBA Risk Management and Insurance.

Area Students Graduate from Bridgewater College

Bridgewater College held Commencement exercises on Saturday, April 29. Approximately 315 undergraduate and 25 graduate students from the Class of 2023 received degrees.

Flagler College Class of 2023 Commencement

Flagler College celebrated the academic and personal accomplishments of more than 450 graduates at the Class of 2023 Commencement Ceremony on Saturday, May 6.

This year’s graduating class brought ideas and perspectives from across the country and world, with students from 32 states and two territories of the U.S., and more than a dozen international exchange students. Area students include:

  • McKenna McQueen, a graduate from Williamsburg, Bachelor of Arts degree for Theatre Arts.
  • Ha’ani Smith, a graduate from Williamsburg, Bachelor of Arts degree for Psychology.

Omicron Delta Kappa Celebrates New Members

Omicron Delta Kappa, the National Leadership Honor Society, welcomed 1,869 new initiates from 78 universities during April 2023.

Students initiated into the Society must be sophomores, juniors, seniors, or graduate/professional students in the top 35% of their class, demonstrate leadership experience in at least one of the five pillars, and embrace the ODK ideals. Fewer than five percent of students on a campus are invited to join each year.

Matthew Stumpf of Williamsburg Inducted into UA Omicron Delta Kappa Honor Society

The University of Alabama honored the achievement of numerous students, faculty and staff during the annual Tapping on the Mound ceremony April 7.

Among those recognized were students inducted into the Omicron Delta Kappa Honor Society, including Matthew Stumpf of Williamsburg.

The purpose of Omicron Delta Kappa is to recognize those students who have attained high standards in collegiate activities, to inspire others to strive for similar attainments and to bring together students in all areas of college life: scholarship; athletics; campus or community service; social and religious activities; campus government; journalism, speech and mass media; and creative and performing arts.

Claire Martin inducted into Radford University’s circle of Omicron Delta Kappa

Claire Abigail Martin of Williamsburg was inducted into Radford University’s circle of Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK) during a ceremony April 10 at the Hurlburt Student Center.

The unique mission of ODK is to recognize and encourage collaboration among collegiate leaders. The Society seeks to identify, celebrate and engage collegiate and community leaders from different backgrounds, perspectives and generations. Members enjoy scholarship opportunities, leadership development programs, access to a nation network and more.

The eligibility requirements for ODK include:

  1. Two semesters (one year) as a full-time student at Radford University.
  2. Sophomore, junior or senior standing.
  3. A minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.4 (sophomores), 3.5 (juniors), or 3.6 (seniors).
  4. Exemplary character as evident by the submission of a resume and character references.
  5. Achievement of special distinction in leadership.

McKenna McQueen Initiated into Omicron Delta Kappa

McKenna McQueen, a native of Williamsburg, was recently initiated into the Flagler College Circle of Omicron Delta Kappa, the National Leadership Honor Society. The Society welcomed 152 new initiates from 10 universities during February 2023.

Students initiated into the Society must be sophomores, juniors, seniors, or graduate/professional students in the top 35% of their class, demonstrate leadership experience in at least one of the five pillars, and embrace the ODK ideals. Fewer than five percent of students on a campus are invited to join each year.

Local students named to UAF honors lists

The University of Alaska Fairbanks announced the students named to the deans’ and chancellor’s lists for the fall 2022 semester. The lists recognize students’ outstanding academic achievements.

Students receiving a 3.9 grade point average or higher are placed on the chancellor’s list, while those receiving a grade point average of between 3.5 and 3.89 are named to the deans’ list.

Matthew Barry Receives Degree from Georgia Tech

Matthew Barry of Toano has earned a Master of Science in Mathematics from the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta.

Barry was among approximately 5,620 undergraduate and graduate students to be presented Georgia Tech degrees during the Institute’s 263rd Commencement exercises Dec. 16-17 at Bobby Dodd Stadium.
