NORFOLK — Breeze Airways announced seasonal service to its first three international destinations in Mexico and the Caribbean Thursday, including flights from Norfolk International Airport to Cancún, Mexico, starting in January.

The nonstop international service will start Jan. 10 and run weekly on Saturdays. It will be the first international flight out of Norfolk since 2001.

Breeze noted it was the first airline in more than 10 years to be certified by the FAA as a U.S. Flag Carrier, and in conjunction, the airline announced seasonal service to its first three international destinations in Mexico and the Caribbean, subject to government approval, as well as a new crew base in Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina (RDU) to support the expansion.

Service to Cancun, Mexico; Punta Cana, Dominican Republic; and Montego Bay, Jamaica is set to begin this winter from six Breeze airports.

“Becoming a U.S. flag carrier is a huge milestone for Breeze, and one that our Team Members have been working tirelessly on for the last three years,” said David Neeleman, Breeze Airways’ founder and CEO. “We’re excited to bring the same convenience and elevated experience they love about our domestic flights to three exciting new international destinations.”

According to Breeze Airways, it operates more than 300 year-round and seasonal routes to 81 cities in the United States, Mexico and the Caribbean. The airline was founded by Neeleman in May 2021.
