City of Williamsburg Receives Pair of Awards from the Government Finance Officers Association

WILLIAMSBURG — The Government Finance Officers Association announced that the City of Williamsburg received the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for its Fiscal Year 2026 Adopted Budget.

The city’s budget also received special recognition for its budget overview and long-range operating financial plans.

Special recognition is given when all three GFOA reviewers give the highest possible score in a particular category, according to the city, which added the award and special recognition “reflect the City’s commitment to meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting.”

“We are honored to receive the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award from the GFOA,” said Finance Director Barbara Dameron. “This recognition reflects our dedication to transparency and excellence in financial management, and our commitment to providing a clear and comprehensive understanding of our budget to our community.”

To receive the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award, the city had to satisfy nationally recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation. These guidelines are designed to assess how well an entity’s budget serves as:

  • a policy document
  • a financial plan
  • an operations guide
  • a communications device

Budget documents must be rated “proficient” in all four categories and in the 14 mandatory criteria within those categories to receive the award, the city said.

There are more than 1,900 participants in the Budget Awards Program.
