YORKTOWN — For best friends Karen Hampton and Gabrielle Mueller, opening a store together was a dream they had since Mueller’s college years, and in November of 2020, locally-owned Edgewood Outfitters opened its doors.

Edgewood Outfitters is a women’s clothing store that originally operated out of the Williamsburg Premium Outlets. In 2022, the store gained so much popularity that a larger space was needed and Hampton and Mueller moved their shop to the Patrick Henry Mall in Newport News.

The Edgewood Outfitters name stems from a farm that has been in the family since 1893. Both Mueller and Hampton aim to be the go-to brand that represents an all-American fashion style that blends heritage and contemporary style.

Customers of Edgewood Outfitters can shop a bohemian look, with casual and comfy options. The store sells jeans, dresses, jumpsuits, and flowy tops. The brand is also big on offering neutral color palettes to appeal to its large customer base.

“At Edgewood Outfitters, we want all of our customers to feel confident in themselves and embrace what makes them unique. We are big on body positivity and girl power, as well as embracing diversity,” Mueller said.

With body positivity as one of the business’s pillars, Mueller was adamant that the store would be size-inclusive.

“Edgewood Outfitters is a little different than most locally owned boutiques/clothing stores in that we are a size-inclusive retailer. Virtually all of our styles come in size ranges small to 3x, and jeans sizes 1-22/24, where most traditional retailers don’t carry the full-size range. We have made the commitment to our customers and made it a mission for our brand to be size-inclusive and if we aren’t able to carry a full-size range in a style, we won’t carry it. This is no easy feat but we have made it our commitment to our customers,” Mueller said.

Being a locally-owned establishment, the team at Edgewood Outfitters loves to showcase local women in their marketing efforts.

“We are unique in the fact that the marketing posters we have in store and the lifestyle pictures we have online are, in fact, local girls from our area, many are friends and sometimes we like to recruit customers to be part of the fun. We believe that it’s important to show real people in our lifestyle imagery as opposed to models,” Mueller shared.

They also love to highlight the local area.

“We love being located near the Historic Triangle because we are able to serve customers from all of the surrounding areas, who come to the mall and shop with us. Many of our regulars are from Yorktown, Williamsburg and Gloucester,” Mueller says.

As the brand has grown, Mueller and Hampton are hopeful to add a Southside location in the fall of 2024.

The store is open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sundays from noon until 6 p.m. The team frequently posts to the Edgewood Outfitters Instagram account and offers online shopping at
