Each week, WYDaily will begin featuring a local musician, group, event, or venue as part of its Brews and Tunes! This week, Ben Mackin chats with local musician, Patrick Ryan.Who is on that stage?
For local troubadour Patrick Ryan, hustle is a way of life. On any given night during any given week you can find him in any given music venue around Hampton Roads. Whether he is playing solo gigs, with his band or hosting the open mic on Thursdays at The Brass Tap Williamsburg, you can count on an energetic and soulful show.
Here are five quick facts about Patrick Ryan:
Q: What was the first album to blow your mind?
A: “Dark Side of the Moon” by Pink Floyd
Q: What is your favorite instrument that you own and why?
A: My first nice electric guitar is a Mexican made Fender Stratocaster. It was pretty regular, but I have done a lot of work on it to the point it that its custom now.
Q: When and where was your first gig and how did it go?
A: It was three years ago at Schooners in Newport News before they moved. I almost didn’t do it because we didn’t have any time to rehearse. It can be hard to get a band together to practice. We almost got someone else to cover it so that we had more time to rehearse. I am really glad we did it though because the show went really well and I am not sure it ever would have happened.
Q: What is your favorite song to cover live?
A: Solo I would say “#41” by Dave Mathews Band and with a band, either “Feelin’ Alright” by Joe Cocker or “Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)” by Sly & The Family Stone
Q: When and where are your next few gigs?
A: Friday, Jan. 21, 8 p.m. at Baron’s Pub, 185 N Main St. Suffolk
Saturday, Jan. 22, 6 p.m. at Cove Tavern, 711 Town Center Dr. Newport News
