Hungry residents can eat hot dogs while helping actual dogs find forever homes.
Billsburg Brewery and the Hungry Pug Food Truck are hosting a hot dog-eating contest at 2 p.m. July 4. All proceeds will benefit Heritage Humane Society.
The idea originated with Scott Coelln, owner of the Hungry Pug, which opened in May with a variety of grilled-cheese sandwiches.
“This’ll be perfect — the hot dogs, the dogs, the Fourth of July,” Coelln said. “Other areas do it, and being part of this [business], I really want to give back to the community.”
There will be five contestants, each tasked with eating 10 hot dogs.
Before each contestant will be an empty jar, and guests will place their donations in the jar belonging to the contestant they expect to win.
The contestant who eats the hot dogs the fastest and whoever’s jar holds the most money will win $25 gift certificates to both Billsburg and the Hungry Pug.
Two adoptable dogs from Heritage Humane Society will be onsite, Executive Director Kimberly Laska said. There will also be a raffle for Heritage dog- and cat-themed gift baskets.
“It’s going to be at Billsburg, which is one of the best places in town to hang out,” Laska said. “We don’t tend to think about things like food eating contests, but they did and it’s clever.”
