Spaghetti dinner at Covenant Christian School will raise funds for Hurricane Florence victims

Students, staff and families will come together at Covenant Christian School (CCS) on Friday evening, Nov. 2, for a spaghetti dinner to raise financial support for Hurricane Florence victims in North Carolina. The event is expected to bring more than 80 attendees, who are asked to make a donation of any amount in exchange for the meal.

Amelia Davis, a new parent at the school this year, recently moved to Williamsburg with her family from a previous military assignment in Jacksonville, North Carolina. Davis worked as an elementary school teacher throughout the several years that they lived there. When her former community experienced the devastating effects of Hurricane Florence on Sept. 14, she was distraught.

Thinking about the homes of her friends and previous students that were flooded and destroyed, Davis approached CCS Head of School Christine Schulker to ask if there was anything the school could do to help. “From the beginning, Mrs. Davis and I agreed that this should be a student-driven initiative,” Schulker said. “CCS incorporates community service experience into our curriculum, and volunteerism is very much a part of our culture. So, when Mrs. Davis presented the situation to our student council members during one of their weekly meetings, they unanimously voted in favor of helping.”

The Student Council Association created a plan to invite school families to a fundraising dinner to support two specific Jacksonville families who are friends of the Davis family. The Clink family has five daughters and the Kester family has four young children; both are still displaced after their homes sustained severe damage. Based on the proceeds collected, student council members will determine whether they can also make a donation to a relief organization in order to help as many families as possible.

For the event, an anonymous donor is providing spaghetti, sauce, and rolls, with hamburger donated by Grace and Mercy Farm. Teachers and staff are pooling resources to provide drinks, and they will also serve the food while students serve as greeters and hosts.

“The spaghetti dinner is a great way to fellowship and raise funds for the Kester and Clink families,” Davis said. “It shows the Jacksonville community that we are unified and their burdens are shared by others. Together we can help find comfort in this storm.”
