Update Provided Regarding Second Deadly Crash

JAMES CITY COUNTY — The Virginia State Police (VSP) have provided an update regarding a second fatal crash that occurred this morning in the Historic Triangle.

At approximately 7:22 a.m., VSP responded to the scene of a second single vehicle crash on I-64. The driver of a 2015 Chevrolet Express van, identified as 31-year-old Humerto Vara-Luna of Arlington, was traveling eastbound when he lost control of the vehicle, ran over the roadway, and rolled the vehicle several times across the median before coming to a rest on the shoulder.

Vara-Luna was able to exit the vehicle and was transported to Riverside Regional Hospital with serious injuries.

His passenger, identified as 30-year-old Wlber Escobar-Orellana of Triangle, Va., suffered serious, life-threatening injuries. He was med-flighted to Medical College of Virginia in Richmond. The van’s rear passenger, 30-year-old Sara Maria Diaz-Nieto, also of Triangle, died of her injuries at the scene.

Vara-Luna has since been charged with reckless driving and driving with a revoked license. VSP has stated that alcohol may have been a contributing factor. Any additional charges are pending the final results of the investigation.
