This week’s Williamsburg Fall Arts offerings include chalk, clay and colonial baking.
Previously known as Arts Month, the programs run through Columbus Day weekend in October, culminating with the annual An Occasion for the Arts.
This week’s events:
New Town Chalk, Race and Tunes
Art comes to New Town in many forms this week.
The New Town Arts Festival runs from Thursday through Sunday at Legacy Hall, and features an exhibition by the Peninsula Glass Guild. The contemporary work by regional artists will also be available for purchase.
On Saturday, sidewalk art and live music come to Sullivan Square. Professional and amateur artists will participate in the New Town Chalk Fest, in its third year. See a photo slideshow from last year’s festival here.
The chalk continues Sunday, with the Chalkapalooza 5K and One Mile Fun Run on Sunday. The colorful run steps off at 8 a.m.
A Touch of Earth
Local artist Bob Oller will sketch and sculpt from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at A Touch of Earth gallery. The gallery will also host an “In the Clay Zone” celebration from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., featuring clay artist Elizabeth Krome accompanied by musician Tim Seaman.
Macrophotography at Williamsburg Botanical Garden
The Williamsburg Botanical Garden will present an evening program on macrophotography Thursday. Felice Bond, Historic Rivers Chapter Master Naturalist and photographer, will talk at 7 p.m. at the garden.
Historic Jamestowne Baking
Learn about how the colonists created baked goods at a talk Sunday by Paula Marcoux. The author of “Cooking with Fire” will present “Ovens on the Edge: How the First European Colonists Baked Bread, 1590-1640.” It starts at 2 p.m. at the Historic Jamestowne Visitor Center.
The Gallery at York Hall
The Gallery at York, which opened an exhibit of pine needle baskets this month, will host artist meet-and-greets and demonstrations throughout September. This Saturday will feature photographer Karl Arndt.
Other ongoing arts events continue through the weekend, including:
- Candlelight concerts at Bruton Parish Church, featuring organist Dr. JanEl Will on Thursday and the Sounds of Gold choral ensemble on Saturday, both starting at 8 p.m.
- Rhythms on the Riverwalk, with Super Jazz Band featuring Conni Mann playing at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Riverwalk Landing in Yorktown
