W.Y.D2Along with the start of August, this weekend brings outdoor activities for the whole family, as well as plenty of chances to hear live local music.

Athletics

Meet Olympic runner Anne Audain at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Williamsburg Community Chapel. Presented by the Growing Runners Track Club, Audain will present a film about her perseverance over severe feet deformities, as well as answer questions and sign copies of her autobiography. The WISC Mad Dash 5k and Fun Run steps off Saturday morning at the Williamsburg Indoor Sports Complex. Registration and packet pickup starts at 6:30 a.m., with the 1-mile Fun Run at 7:30 a.m. and the 5k at 8 a.m. The race is part of the “Around the World Cup” family festival, which runs from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Family Fun and Festivals

Friday marks the start of the “Arms & Artillery” theme month at Jamestown Settlement and Yorktown Victory Center. Interpretive programs at both locations will feature the weapons and tactics of 17th- and 18th-century Virginia, free to residents of the Historic Triangle.

The fifth annual Cardboard Boat Regatta — presented by the Williamsburg Jaycees to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters — has been rescheduled due to the weather forecast. The creative material race will be held Aug. 16 at the Watermen’s Museum.

The seventh annual Jenna Bash Festival on Saturday raises funds for Proclaiming Grace Outreach, a nonprofit started in memory of a teen killed in a car crash. From 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., the festival will have a water slide, inflatables, silent auction, food, music, raffles and a butterfly release. For the second year, DoG Street Pub will hold a Craft Beer Festival in Merchants Square. Rain or shine, the event includes breweries from across Virginia, paired with food by chef David Everett and live music. The festival runs from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.

The Virginia German Shepherd Rescue will be hold an Adoption Day event Sunday at Petco. The all-volunteer nonprofit will have pictures of all available dogs starting at noon.

Tunes

Thursday is open mic night at Aromas in Williamsburg. The music starts at 7:30 p.m. for daring performers or their spectators.

Absolute Acoustic will perform live Friday night at Cogan’s Deli in New Town. The progressive, acoustic rock duo starts at 8 p.m.

Hear live jazz every Saturday at Prime46forty. A variety of local groups perform weekly, starting at 9:30 p.m.
