Residents of all ages honored the military over the Memorial Day holiday weekend. Four students received awards to continue their passion for nature, while the area was honored for its work in marketing itself as a destination. Groups made monetary and book donations to support young readers and people with disabilities, and a team of motorcyclists rode through the area.
Local Organizations Mark Memorial Day
The Fifes and Drums of Yorktown played at home and in the nation’s capital to honor military service Memorial Day. Some members stayed in Yorktown to perform for the Memorial Day Ceremony at York Hall, while others participated in the National Memorial Day Parade in Washington D.C.
The Corps played its opening performance at the Nelson House for the National Park Service earlier in the weekend, and will perform on Wednesdays and Sundays throughout the summer.
At Greenfield Senior Living of Williiamsburg, 15 veterans who served in World War II, the Korean War and Vietnam participated in a Flag Dedication Ceremony honoring their service. Neal Clarke, executive director of the center and U.S. Navy veteran, presided over the ceremony assisted by representatives of the U.S. Army who folded and hoisted a flag.
A special presentation of the US Navy Flag was made to Edmundo Lacerda who served at Normandy Beach on D-Day.
Nature Camp Scholarships Awarded
Four young women will have the opportunity to attend nature camp this summer, thanks to awards from the Historic Rivers Chapter of the Virginia Master Naturalists.
Nash McDowell, Katherine Zickel, Emily Beach and Sofia Mendez all received the Nancy Norton Nature Camp Scholarships. They will attend camp this summer to study the natural world.
Greater Williamsburg Honored for Public Relations Excellence
The Hospitality Sales & Marketing Association International has awarded Greater Williamsburg with a Silver Adrian Award for its winning entry in the 57th annual Adrian Awards, a global travel marketing competition.
This year’s contest had more than 1,200 entries judge by top executives in the industry.
Greater Williamsburg won Silver in the category Feature Print Placement – Consumer Magazine or Newspaper, for the Washington Post article entitled “Yesterday Once More.”
The Williamsburg Area Destination Marketing Committee (WADMC), in partnership with public relations agency Development Counsellors International, pitched and developed the story with editor Andrea Sachs. Highlighting new travel experiences, the three-page feature ran in April 2013 with multiple images by a Washington Post photographer.
Arc of Williamsburg Receives Donation
The John Cardinal O’Connor Division of the Ancient Order of Hibernians presented a check for $200 to the Arc of Greater Williamsburg.
The organization serves people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families, providing educational and life skills classes, health and wellness programs, and cultural, social, and recreational activities every week.
York Republican Women’s Club Donates Books to York County Public Library
The York Republican Women’s Club donated copies of the audiobook “Rush Revere and the First Patriots” by Rush Limbaugh to their local libraries. Geared to children ages 9 through 12, the book discusses the American Revolution and issues of freedom.
Copies of this book can be checked out at both the Tabb and Yorktown libraries.
Knights of the Road Ride through Williamsburg
The Williamsburg Campark LLC hosted the Knights of the Road Motorcycle Club last weekend, with 15 motorcycles and numerous riders joining in a group ride Saturday morning from the Campark to Williamsburg Pottery.
The ride was followed by a motorcycle show in the afternoon, with a live performance by the Billy Joe Trio playing classic rock and blues hits.
New Health Care Coordinator at Senior Living Home
Angelique Callais has been named health care coordinator at Greenfield Senior Living of Williamsburg.
Callais is a Licensed Practical Nurse and joins the Greenfield team with more than three years of experience in assisted living. In her new role, she will oversee resident medications, care plans and physician orders.
