Hometown: Norment Honors Judge Holloway, Family with Resolution

Sen. Tommy Norment presented the Holloway family with a copy of the General Assembly resolution honoring the life of Judge Gordon Duane Holloway.

State Sen. Tommy Norment gathered with friends and family of Judge Gordon Duane Holloway to honor and celebrate his life on June 2.

Holloway, a judge who served Virginia’s Ninth Judicial Circuit for 15 years, died December 11. Norment submitted a resolution to the General Assembly honoring Holloway, and he presented a copy of the approved resolution to Holloway’s wife of 61 years, Patricia, and to their four sons and their families, at the June 2 gathering.

“Judge Holloway faithfully served his community, the Commonwealth, and the interests of justice with great integrity and wisdom,” the resolution reads.

Holloway earned his bachelor’s degree from the Virginia Military Institute and his law degree from the College of William & Mary’s Marshall-Wythe School of law. He was appointed as substitute judge for York County in 1957 at the age of 26; two years later, he was appointed as the Commonwealth’s Attorney for York County, a role he filled for 10 years.

Holloway continued to serve the Commonwealth on the Virginia Marine Resources Commission and Hampton Roads Sanitation District Commission until his election in 1980 as Circuit Court Judge for the Ninth Judicial Circuit.

According to the resolution, Holloway earned “the respect of his peers, courtroom staff, and attorneys who came to the bench.” He also “possessed a formidable knowledge of the law and strong commitment to justice, and made many contributions to the judiciary throughout his tenure.”

Hollway was also active in the community, helping organize the Virginia Waterman’s Association, earning the York County Jaycees Distinguished Service Award, and serving as the grand marshal of the 1986 Poquoson Seafood Festival parade.

The June 2 reception was organized by family friend of the Holloways and Senator Norment, Anne Bradstreet Smith.
