After attending Liberty University baseball camps for the past three summers, rising Jamestown senior Christopher Jones finally received the news he had been waiting to hear.
At Liberty’s most recent baseball camp last weekend, Jones was pulled aside by baseball coaches and offered the opportunity to play for his “dream school.”
“I couldn’t believe it,” Jones said. “It was crazy. I had to step out of the office and gather myself because I was so excited.”
After calming himself down and regaining his composure, the Jamestown left fielder gave his verbal commitment to play baseball for the Flames.
His top choice for college, Jones fell in love with the Liberty campus nestled in the heart of Lynchburg and felt it was a place he could remain focused on and off the field.
A Christian university, Jones said he appreciated Liberty’s mission to keep Christ at the center of everything it does.
“Everything there revolves around Christ,” he said. “That will definitely help me off the field first, and on the field.”
On the field, Liberty coaches told Jones they were impressed with his power and bat speed at the plate, as well as his speed in the outfield and on the base paths.
Jones, who helped lead Jamestown to a Bay Rivers District championship in 2015 and Williamsburg Post 39 to the Virginia state tournament, is predicted to play in the outfield at Liberty.
Knowing where he is going to college is a big relief for Jones, who has visions of helping Jamestown right the wrongs of last year’s postseason in which the Eagles were defeated in the Conference 19 semifinals.
“We had a great team and choked in the conference tournament,” he said. “We’re getting focused early to make it to the next level in the playoffs.”
Correction: Christopher Jones will be heading to Liberty as a preferred walk-on instead of a scholarship player.
