VHSL Postpones 4A Swimming and Diving Championship Until Friday

vhslAfter reaching out to athletic directors and coaches for their opinions on how to handle this weekend’s swimming and diving championship, the Virginia High School League announced Wednesday the 4A meet will be postponed.

Initially scheduled for Thursday, the meet will be pushed back to Friday at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center in western Virginia.

Tabb, Grafton and Jamestown are the local schools classified in Group 4A.

In a news release, the VHSL explained its decision by citing additional expected snowfall in Christiansburg today, as well as safety concerns for students and staff traveling from all parts of the state.

The 4A will run concurrently with the 3A championships, which keeps its original Friday competition date, in different sections of the Christiansburg Aquatic Center to allow for the preservation of the meet format.

Group 3A includes Lafayette, Warhill and York high schools.

“I don’t know that there were any great decisions,” said Grafton swim coach Whitney Riefler, whose team is directly affected by the postponement. “People are going to complain about whatever decision they made. My only problem is now they won’t have warmup lanes for the kids, but it’s better than not swimming.”

While the 4A and 3A championships finally have a bit of stability, the 2A championships, scheduled for Saturday, still have an air of uncertainty around it due to expected inclement weather over the weekend in Christiansburg.

The VHSL is asking participating 2A schools, which includes Bruton High, to get approval for Sunday participation from administrators in case Saturday’s meet is disrupted by another winter storm.
