Boys Basketball Roundup: Bruton Fights Off Upset-Minded Warhill

BrutonThe Bruton boys basketball team narrowly avoided being upset by Warhill during a 56-53 game.

The game seemed out of reach in the second half with Bruton leading by 12 points, but a Warhill run pushed the Panthers to the brink as the Lions took a one-point lead in the fourth quarter.

The two teams battled back and forth before a steal-and-score sequence gave Bruton (12-1, 10-1 Bay Rivers District) a three-point lead late in the fourth.

In the waning moments of the fourth quarter, Warhill (5-10, 4-7) missed a driving layup attempt but collected the rebound. The Lions pushed the ball to the perimeter for a game-tying shot but missed, ending the upset bid.

Shaquan Edwards led Bruton with 16 points, while James Taylor added 12.

Ra’Shawn Cook scored a team-high 15 points for Warhill. Keron Dedmon chipped in 14.

Strong First Quarter Lifts Tabb Over Lafayette

Tabb (12-4, 9-3 Bay Rivers District) and Lafayette played nearly even basketball for three quarters after Tabb’s breakout first quarter that led the Tigers to a 57-49 victory.

The Tigers game out aggressive on defense in the first quarter, leading to several steals and points in transition during the opening stanza.

After Tabb’s 18-10 first quarter advantage, the two teams played neck-and-neck throughout the rest of the game, with neither team able to significantly change the point difference.

Robert Sebastien led all scorers with 18 points for Tabb, while Terrell Sheffey added 12. Antwuan Hicks logged a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Trey Neville led Lafayette (5-5, 5-5) with 11 points.

York Coasts Against Poquoson

York took control from the jump against Poquoson, cruising to a 57-44 Bay Rivers District win.

The Falcons (5-9, 3-8 Bay Rivers District) began pulling away in the second quarter, getting up by as much as 18 points.

Poquoson (1-14, 0-12) narrowed the score to single digits while York subbed in reserve players in the third quarter. Eric Harp ended the comeback opportunity by hammering home a pair of dunks before Jaylen Riggsbee splashed a 3-pointer to re-extend the York lead.

Harp finished the game with 11 points for York, while Lamont Simmons added 11.

Smithfield Tops Jamestown

Nicholas Wells scored a game-high 16 points to lead Smithfield past Jamestown in Bay Rivers District play.

Christopher Pierce added 15 for Smithfield (9-5, 7-3 Bay Rivers District). Ryan Jones logged 11, while Nicholas Turner chipped in 10 for Smithfield.

Connor Swain led Jamestown (6-7, 5-6) with eight points.

Walsingham Topples Norfolk Academy

Richard Washington continued his break-neck scoring pace by logging 28 points during Walsingham’s 70-42 win against Norfolk Academy.

Mark Seaman added 15 points for Walsingham.

Hampton Roads Academy Defeats Peninsula Catholic

The Hampton Roads Academy offense was on full display against Peninsula Catholic on Friday night. The Navigators dropped 81 points, including 23 points from Anthony Picott.

Bryan Hart added to the offensive explosion with 20 points for HRA, while Devone Humphry added 12.

Buzzer-Beater Sinks WCA

The Williamsburg Christian Academy (14-8, 9-2 Metro Conference) boys suffered a defeat at the hands of Atlantic Shores, dropping the Metro Conference contest 72-71 in overtime Friday.

On the second to last possession of the game, Andrew Brown of Williamsburg Christian Academy drained a 3-pointer that put the Eagles on top 71-69.

On the other end of the court, Hunter Ladler plunged a dagger into the hearts of the WCA faithful by splashing a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to give Atlantic Shores the win as time expired.

Xavier Green had 16 points and nine rebounds for WCA. Andre Brown scored 16 points, while Ryan Flanagan added 14.
