Girls Basketball Roundup: Strong Second Half Lifts Warhill over Smithfield

In a matchup of two early-season Bay Rivers District favorites, host Warhill held Smithfield to 15 points during the second half to win 57-44 in the season opener for both teams Tuesday.

The Lions, who were led by Kasey Grainer’s 22 points and nine rebounds, trailed 29-28 at the half before using a mixture of different defenses to put the clamps on the Packers and make their second-half run.

Warhill also got solid performances from sophomores Keely Rochard, who posted a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds, and point guard Kieran McClure, who finished with eight points, seven rebounds and five assists.

“Smithfield is a very good team, very well-coached,” Warhill coach Bingo Brungot said. “Our defense was spot on tonight. We trusted each other and played true team ball. I was really proud of the girls.”

Lafayette Rallies to Beat Bruton

Jill Curtis scored a team-high 14 points as Lafayette overcame a 15-7 first quarter deficit to beat Bruton 49-41 on the road Tuesday.

The Rams (2-0, 1-0 BRD) trailed 22-18 at halftime but outscored the Panthers 15-7 during the third period to take the lead for good.

Bruton’s Kelsey Sluss scored 17 points to lead all scorers.

Grafton Breezes Past Jamestown

The Clippers led 55-15 after three quarters and held on for an easy 73-32 victory over Jamestown at home Tuesday.

Senior Hayley Marshall led Grafton with 20 points while Haley Cunningham netted 20 in her varsity debut. Christa Hall totaled 12 points, eight rebounds and eight assists as the starting point guard.

Jamiyah Johnson led Jamestown with 20 points.

WCA Wins Metro Conference Opener

Imani Bryant matched the opposing team’s total with 17 points as Williamsburg Christian Academy handled Metro Conference Denbigh Baptist 50-17 on the road Tuesday.

Daizhua Jones added 14 points, Quazia Jones had nine and Kaylee Boger chipped in with eight points in the victory.

Tabb Edges Poquoson

Tabb beat Poquoson 55-50 in the season opener for both teams Tuesday.

It was a 25-25 game at the half.
