Lafayette boys edge conference rival in season opener, and both Walsingham girls and boys cruise past Summit Christian at home.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Lafayette 54 Colonial Heights 51
Marc Rivera scored a game-high 18 points as Lafayette’s boys basketball team held off fellow Conference 25 member Colonial Heights 54-51 at Lafayette High on Monday night. Colonial Heights trailed by as many as 12 points late in the fourth quarter before rallying back. They had a shot to send the game to overtime but a three-pointer at the buzzer clanked off the rim. In addition to Rivera, first-year coach Dan Downs said junior point guard Dequan Harris did a solid job pushing the ball in transition and making good decisions.
“We have a tough first week of district matchups against Bruton [on Wednesday] and Grafton [on Friday], so I was glad to see us pull this one out and get a win under our belt,” Downs said after the game.
Walsingham Academy 81 Summit Christian 17
Braden Sutton led all scorers with 20 points, Kai Brown contributed 14 points and James West came off the bench to knock down a trio of 3-pointers for 11 points as Walsingham breezed past Summit Christian at home Monday night. The Trojans, who hosted and won a invitational tournament over the weekend, improved to 3-0 on the season with the victory.
