Saturday’s game between W&M and Richmond will mark the 123rd meeting between the two schools in what has been traditionally called the “Oldest Rivalry in the South,” but may more accurately be described as the most played rivalry in the south. The Tribe leads the all-time series 61-56-5. The teams first met in 1898, when Richmond blanked W&M, 15-0.
W&M boasts one of the nation’s top defensive units this season and currently leads the country in scoring defense (12.5) and ranks seventh in total defense (298.5). The Tribe has been especially effective during the past four games, all of which have come against nationally ranked teams that averaged more than 32 points per game and has allowed just three offensive touchdowns.
Although Richmond currently owns a 5-6 overall record and a 3-4 mark in conference play, the Spiders have won its last three games and are averaging 36.0 points per contest in their last four outings. Quarterback Michael Strauss completed 35 of 46 passes for a school-record 543 yards with five touchdowns in last Saturday’s 46-43 win against then-No. 21/22 Delaware. Richmond owns one of the nation’s top passing attacks and ranks fifth in the country with 336.9 passing yards per game.
