The William and Mary football family lost one of its most passionate and dedicated supporters in Patrick “PG” Gantt, who passed away on Tuesday, November 12, 2013.
“I know I speak for the entire Tribe Football Family in saying that PG will be terribly missed,” said William and Mary Head Coach Jimmye Laycock. “We lost a great supporter and an even better friend. While we deeply mourn the passing of PG, his spirit, support and friendship will never be forgotten by the generations of coaches and players who had the pleasure of getting to know him.”
PG, a life-long lover of athletics, started his association with the program during the 1983 season, when he started a three-year stint working with the squad’s equipment staff. He quickly became a fixture on the sidelines and around the locker room.
PG became a full-time member of the team’s equipment staff for the 1986 season. That same year tragedy struck when he was dealt a debilitating injury in the wake of the team’s on-field celebration after its victory over the University of Virginia. Despite being wheelchair bound, his love and commitment to the program remained unwavering.
He maintained a visible presence, along with his sister Vickie Gantt, throughout the following decades, making the effort to be on the sidelines for the majority of the team’s games, home or away.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m. Friday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 213 N. 25th St., Richmond, Va. 23223. Interment will follow in Washington Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Tribe Club – Football Department, William and Mary Intercollegiate Athletics, Box 399, Williamsburg, Va. 23187
