Bruton and New Kent football players will observe a moment of silence prior to Friday’s Bay Rivers District game at Bruton High to honor Trojans’ sophomore linebacker Jacob Vick, who died after collapsing during practice Tuesday night.
New Kent athletic director Julie Ellis and Bruton football coach Tracy Harrod said Friday’s game will be played as scheduled, pending weather. Harrod said the moment of silence will take place prior to the 7 p.m. kickoff.
On Wednesday morning, New Kent County schools superintendent Dr. Rick Richardson released the following statement regarding Vick’s death:
“On behalf of the New Kent School Board and School Community, may I offer my sincerest condolences to the family of our New Kent student. We can only imagine the extent of the grief they are experiencing through this very tragic loss.
Out of deep respect for the family’s privacy, and consistent with their request, I will have no further comments nor will I answer any questions at this time.
I AM, however, asking for your full cooperation in respecting the family’s wishes by withholding any questions or interview requests for the family, as well as any questions directed towards our students or staff.
Thank you in advance for granting the respect due this family’s request for privacy.”
