Warhill pitcher Michael Brumfield and catcher Blake Wills received high honors on the Group AA all-state baseball team that was released by the Virginia High School Coaches Association last week.
Both Brumfield and Wills, who helped the Lions become the first boys sports team in school history to make a state-tournament appearance this spring, were voted to the all-state first team – Brumfield as a pitcher and Wills as a utility player.
Brumfield, the Bay Rivers and Region I Player of the Year, posted a 10-1 record in 13 starts with a 1.43 earned run average and 107 strikeouts over 83 innings pitched. He also led the Lions, who became the first boys sports team in school history to reach the state tournament, at the plate with 23 RBIs and was second on the team in batting with .348 average.
Wills, who played pitcher, catcher and hit in the DH slot, was equally as versatile for Warhill this season. He batted .333 with 18 runs and 14 RBIs while posting a 6-1 record and 0.43 ERA on the mound.
Brumfield and Wills were joined on the all-state first team by New Kent DH Kevin Karaffa, who helped New Kent to its first Bay Rivers District title, which the Trojans shared with Warhill.
Two of the Bay Rivers District’s most dangerous sluggers, York third baseman Trevor Kelly and Grafton first baseman Nic Kurz, received honorable mentions.
