Bryan Davis, who has coached football the past 10 years in North Carolina, has been named the new head coach at Warhill High School.
Davis, who will be introduced at the school Friday, takes over for Billy Jarvis, who stepped down in March to become the head coach at Middlesex High School. A meet and greet for players, their families and fans will be held at 5 p.m. today (Friday) in the Warhill gym, according to Warhill Athletic Director Dan Mullen.
Davis, who served as a wide receivers and defensive backs coach under his father Dave Davis at Ferrum College in the mid-90s, began his head coaching career at Southwest Guilford High School in High Point, N.C. There, he led his 2004, 2005 and 2006 teams to the state playoffs after inheriting a program that had lost 18 consecutive games, and 32 of its previous 33.
In 2007, Davis took over at Topsail High School in Hampstead, N.C. — a program that had just two winning seasons in school history, and none since 2000. He guided the team to a school record eight victories during his first season in 2007, and followed that up with an 11-win season in 2008. He guided Topsail to a 41-29 overall record and five state-tournament appearances during his six years with the school.
Davis also served three years as athletic director at Topsail from 2008-10, and was the school’s head track coach from 2010 until his recent announcement that he would be leaving for Warhill. Davis’ head coaching experience includes stints as basketball and tennis coach during the late ’90s and early 2000s at Patrick County High School in Stuart, Va., and Millbrook High School in Raleigh, N.C.
Davis takes over a Lions program that is coming off the two most successful seasons in school history. Warhill reached the Division 4 playoffs for the first time in 2011 before winning its first playoff game last fall, and will have plenty of talent to work with — most notably versatile playmaker and Division I prospect Devonte Dedmon, as well as athletic running back and wide receiver Reggie Lipscomb.
