Sisters Leah and Anna Walter will both tell you that, from a mental standpoint, competing against one another for Bay Rivers District tennis singles crown was one of the hardest matches either of them have ever endured.
“We were kind of dreading it,” said Leah, a Jamestown senior, after edging her younger sister Anna, a freshman, 6-4, 6-3 for the singles title Wednesday afternoon at Huntington Park. “Especially because it was the first time we’ve ever really played in a real, competitive match against each other.”
As difficult as it was for the two siblings to face one another on opposite sides of the court, the moment they shared a few hours later was one neither will ever forget.
Shortly after their singles bout, the Walter sisters stood alongside one another as district doubles champions after defeating fellow Jamestown teammates Elizabeth Wallace and Kathy Sharp 6-1, 6-0.
“It was really nice to have her on the same side of the net after that tough singles match,” Leah said standing next to her sister. “We’ve come a long way since the beginning of the season. It’s a great feeling to be able to share this with her.”
Said Anna, “I wasn’t really that upset losing to [Leah] in singles. I was just really happy for her.”
While holding her doubles championship medal, Anna added, “You could say this makes up for it.”
