Former York High and North Peninsula Lady Pilots softball standout Eleni Wright, currently a sophomore catcher at the Community College of Baltimore County-Catonsville, was recently named the National Junior College Athletic Association Player of the Week for games played April 22-28.
Wright, who graduated from York in 2011, had a monster week in leading the Cardinals to eight wins during a seven-day span, batting .565 (13-for-23) with five homeruns and 15 RBIs and a 1.261 slugging percentage.
Wright’s 14 homeruns and 52 RBIs on the season are both team highs. Combined with the 17 long balls she belted as a freshman – when she guided the Cardinals to the NJCAA Division II World Series and represented her team in the Home Run Derby – she now holds the school’s all-time homerun record.
Wright played one season as a senior at York and was named to the all-Bay Rivers District and all-Region first teams while earning second team all-state honors for her powerful presence at the plate and strong arm behind it.
Currently, Wright and the Cardinals are competing in regional tournament, hoping to make it back to the NJCAA World Series. She has been garnering interest from a number of NCAA programs and plans on transferring in the fall.
