Lafayette swim coach Harold Baker said last week that it would take nothing short of a “total team effort” in order for his girls to upset favored Jamestown in Tuesday’s meet between the rivals that would decide the Bay Rivers District title.
Baker himself couldn’t have scripted a better outcome.
Five different swimmers won individual races for the Rams (7-0), who took the first seven events of the night as Lafayette edged the Eagles 52-42 at Hampton University’s Holland Hall.
“I was a little surprised,” admitted Baker of the victory. “After the Kecoughtan Invitational, we knew there were some areas that we could do well in, but it was going to take a top-notch performance for us to beat them and everyone executed.”
Lafayette standout Indigo Cristol was the only individual to win multiple events, touching the wall first in the 50 free (25.52) and 100 free (55.60). She also swam a leg in the Rams’ 200 medley and 400 free winning relay teams.
“Jamestown has a lot of good swimmers capable of beating, so we were anxious to see how those (individual events) would play out,” Baker said. “We also finished one-two in the 200 free and 500 free, which was really important because we outscored [Jamestown] 14-2 in those two events.”
With the victory, Lafayette’s girls clinched their first district title since three years ago when they went on to capture the last of five-consecutive Group AA state titles.
The Rams’ boys team (7-0), which cruised past Jamestown 66-28 Tuesday, also clinched the district title for the second time in three seasons after eventual state-champion Tabb brought home the honors last winter.
Lafayette will have one last tune-up before next weekend’s district meet when they close out the regular season on Friday against Smithfield at Holland Hall.
“It means a lot for the boys and girls to beat Jamestown because they all swim together year-round and want to beat one another,” Baker added. “And winning both titles is a nice accomplishment for the program.”
