The Score: Thursday’s Holiday Tournament Recap

Here’s a rundown of last night’s boys and girls basketball holiday-tournament action in the area, including Tabb’s annual BayPort Holiday Tournament, Bruton’s girls’ holiday tournament, and others.

 

BayPort Holiday Tournament

Tabb 71  York 54          

Tabb forward Daniel Schiele scored 22 of his game-high 24 points in the first three quarters as the Tigers led by 10 heading into the fourth, but after York quickly trimmed the deficit to single digits, Kaleb Mitchell took over scoring 11 of his 19 during the final period as Tabb (5-4) held on to win 71-54.

The Falcons (4-5) were led by Brandon Harvell’s 17 points. Sophomore Maxwell Trice added 14. York will play Gloucester at 6 p.m. Friday in the consolation game at Tabb High.

Host Tabb will take on Bay Rivers foe Poquoson, which edged Gloucester 58-55 Thursday, in the championship at 7:30 p.m.

 

Bruton Holiday Tournament

Hampton Roads Academy 42  Warwick 40

After Rachel Lia (16 points, 4 assists) game-tying 3-pointer in the final minute, Braysia Hicks (14 points, 8 rebounds) scored the game-winning layup with less than 10 seconds to go as HRA (6-1) rallied late to beat Warwick in the opening-round of the Bruton Holiday Tournament.

Bruton 90  Denbigh 21

Sharp-shooter Erika Sluss, Kaila Nazario and Alexis Calloway sparked Bruton’s offense, which caught fire in the first half, early while Chasity Henderson starred on the defensive end as the Panthers stormed into Friday’s championship against HRA at 7 p.m. at Bruton High.

WCA Boys, Girls Fall in Opening Round of Boo Williams Christmas Classic

Playing the competitive Boo Williams Christmas Classic, Williamsburg Christian Academy’s boys and girls basketball teams each suffered opening-round defeats Thursday night.

The lady Eagles (7-4) erased a double-digit second-half deficit but fell a point short of pulling off the comeback before losing 45-44. Jalynn Ponzo led (16 points) and Keyana Brown (13 points) led WCA in scoring.

WCA’s boys (0-12) later lost to Edison High 57-53 despite a game-high 30 points from senior Jake Duncan.

 

Walsingham, HRA Boys 1-1 Entering Friday

Following a 66-55 setback against Matoaca in Wednesday’s opening-round of the Henrico Holiday Hoops Classic in Richmond, Walsingham’s boys basketball team responded with a 53-29 victory over J.R. Tucker in the second round Thursday night.

Charles Blaha registered a 12-point, 10-rebound double-double and Brandon LaRose added 13 in the victory for Walsingham (9-2), which will face Glenn Allen the fifth-place game on Friday at 4 p.m. at Henrico High School.

Hampton Roads Academy, which fell to Amelia Academy 54-29 Thursday, will face Hampton Christian in the fifth-place game of the Peninsula Catholic Holiday Tournament at 5:30 Friday.

The Navigators (6-3) beat Denbigh Baptist 81-40 in Wednesday’s opening-round behind K.J. Steinthorsson’s 34-point, 15-rebound effort.

 

Grafton Boys Fall in Opening-Round of Brunswick Tournament

Grafton’s boys lost to Rocky Mount Prep (N.C.) 57-45 in the first round of the touted Brunswick Holiday tournament Thursday night.

Rocky Mount Prep (10-2), which won an Independent state title in 2011, fell to the Clippers (8-2) in the second round of last year’s tournament.

Grafton will play Monticello, which lost to reigning state-champ Brunswick Thursday, in the second round on Friday at 5:30 at Brunswick High.
