Cross Country: Lafayette’s Steck Shines at W&M Invitational; Walsingham Girls Win Weekend Meet

Lafayette senior Kurtis Steck helped Lafayette’s boys cross country team to a fifth-place finish at the William and Mary Invitational on Saturday after he blistered the five-kilometer course at Eastern State Hospital in 16: 12.

Steck’s teammate, Jason Menzies, also turned in a strong performance, placing 12th at 16: 39.

Other top finishers from the Bay Rivers were York’s Dawson Connell, who placed 17th at 16:46, and Jamestown’s Chris Crowder, who finished 23rd at 17: 03. Deep Run’s Grayson Reid paced all individuals, completing the course in 15: 59.

Lafayette was the only team to place in the top 15. Jamestown and New Kent finished 16th and 17th respectively and York placed 21st out of the 36-team field.

In the boys’ B race, Tabb’s Baron Keiffer placed third (17: 15) in leading the Tigers to a third-place finish. Grafton (sixth), Wahill (ninth) and Lafayette (tenth) also turned in top 10 performances.

On the girls’ side, Grafton’s Rachel Rabbitt led all Bay Rivers runners finishing 15th (20:04) out of 210 in the girls’ A race.  Her effort helped the Clippers to a fourth-place finish.

Lafayette’s girls, led by 11th-place Sarah Jeon’s time of 21: 40, finished fourth overall in the ladies’ B race.

Walsingham Dominates Bill McGough Invitational

It was a successful day of racing collectively for each of Walsingham Academy’s four cross country teams at the Bill McGough Invitational in Newport News over the weekend.

The Trojans’ varsity girls team finished first at the 17-team meet hosted by Peninsula Catholic High School, while the varsity boys and JV girls placed second and JV boys in third.

The lady Trojans’ varsity squad, who topped second-place Menchville by 30 points (47-77), were led by Reilly Pieri (21: 49) and Jessica Link (22:09), who rounded out the top five. Christine McBeath (22: 48) chipped in with a ninth-place finish for Walsingham.

Jack Grimson (18:38) was Walsingham’s only top 15 finisher  – he placed eighth – on the boys’ varsity side as the Trojans finished runners-up to host Peninsula Catholic. PC placed four runners in the top 10 as they collected just 32 points for the day.
