As the four-time defending Group AA state champions, Tabb High’s field hockey team has garnered plenty of attention on both the state and national level the past few years.
Tigers’ coach Wendy Wilson received national Coach of the Year honors in 2011 after leading Tabb to a third-consecutive state title and even made an appearance in Sports Illustrated’s ‘Faces in the Crowd’ section, which recognizes outstanding achievements by players and coaches around the country.
After capturing a fourth-straight state title last fall, Tabb goalie Liz Warness tied a national record for allowing a single goal all season (the Tigers outscored opponents 158-1 on the year en route to a perfect 24-0 record).
The Tigers will be adding more ink to the national record books following a 2-0 sweep at the Westfield tournament in Chantilly this past weekend.
Tabb tied the national record for consecutive shutouts (23), set in 1997 by Emmaus High (Pennsylvania), with an 8-0 win over James Madison High in game one and then broke it with a 4-0 victory over Lake Braddock in game two.
After beating AAA power Cox of Virginia Beach 3-1 in the last year’s season-opener, the Tigers strung together 22 straight shutouts that carried over into this season.
After a strong start to the 2012 campaign, coach Wilson & co. will take their record-setting shutouts streak, now at 24, into a matchup against the last team to net a goal against them.
The Tigers play host to Cox on Thursday at 7 p.m.
