A short walk from Yorktown Beach is the Marl Inn. Built in 1977, the property once belonged to the fourth great grandson of one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Nelson Jr.
According to the home’s current owner, Amy Demetry, the property was converted into an inn in 1996. Since taking over the inn, Demetry has renamed some of the rooms to honor the legacy of the family who once lived there.
“One suite was called the Thomas Nelson Jr. Suite, after the Patriot. Well, we renamed it The Patriot Suite,” Demetry said. “He had a long family history associated with Yorktown.”
The other guest rooms are named the Beach Room, the Garden View Suite (with a view of the garden), the Butterfly Room (according to Demetry, butterflies like to congregate around her lantana bush, which can be seen from the window), and the Yorktown Suite, which is decorated with artwork from local artists.
“It’s Yorktown-themed,” Demetry said of the suite. “There’s a lot of watercolors up there by local artists. Old, kind of colonial pictures depicting Yorktown.”
Both the home and the yard have several unique features. There are a total of twelve doors in the home, two breezeways (one inside, and one outside), and four of the five available guest rooms have private entrances to the outside, which has a garden and a honeybee hive to help pollinate the flowers.
“It’s a very different layout,” Demetry said. “It’s not really a colonial, it’s not really a ranch, it’s just…it’s very peaceful here.”
