WILLIAMSBURG — Colonial Williamsburg will celebrate the holidays this year with special evening hours at the Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg, 301 S Nassau St.
New to the Museums this year is “Tree Trek,” which will feature a total of ten Christmas trees throughout the galleries, including the 16-foot Folk Art tree.
The trees will be decorated with handcrafted ornaments, inspired by the folk art collection of the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum and created by museum staff and volunteers, according to spokesperson Ellen Peltz.
The Museum’s centerpiece, the 16-foot Folk Art tree, has been an annual holiday tradition of Colonial Williamsburg for decades. In 1975, First Lady Betty Ford decorated one of the White House trees with ornaments made by the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum.
Some of those ornaments from 1975 are still decorated on the tree today as part of over 2,000 ornaments.
Also new this year, the Museums will remain open until 9 p.m. every Wednesday in December.
Visitors can come see the trees and enjoy special holiday cookies, hot cocoa, and s’mores for sale in the Museum Café, as well as browse its gift shop.
There will be an illustrated guide for visitors on Wednesday evenings to hunt for objects in the Tree Trek, along with a “Decorate a Holiday Card” activity offered in the Good Education Studio.
Regular admission to the museum is required for entry.
