John M. Salisbury, 78, was born on July 13, 1947, at the Air Force Base in Puerto Rico.
He enlisted into the United States Air Force in 1966 and completed his basic training at Sheppard Air Force Base, TX. He married Betty on October 11, 1966, after she told him “we are getting married on Tuesday”, and so they did.
John proudly served 20 years in the United States Air Force and was stationed in SC, FL, Wiesbaden (Germany), Langley AFB (VA), and Valdosta (GA). He retired from Valdosta and returned home to VA, where he served another 20 years in Civil Service with the United States Air Force, working within the contract management division. He was a true American patriot and was proud to serve his country.
He finally retired (for real) in 2010, one month after his wife, as she was adamant that she would retire before him. After retirement, he spent untold hours supporting the Warwick Little League organization. He kept the landscaping beautifully maintained and was always willing to fulfill any support need that was requested. He and Betty loved supporting the kids and traveled to many All Star tournaments over the years. He and Betty were present at every softball/baseball game of his grandchildren. John continued to actively support WLL even after his grandchildren had graduated from Little League. He found purpose by giving of himself unconditionally.
He also loved working and maintaining his own yard. It was often called “Mr. Miyagi’s yard” due to the impeccable lawn, shrubbery and yard art. The years caught up to him and due to his declining health, he was unable to personally maintain his pride and joy. Many Easter egg hunts for his grandchildren occurred in his yard (there were many great hiding spots). As a matter of fact, one money filled egg is still missing!
John was predeceased by his parents, two brothers (Ray and Doug), his beautiful daughter Patricia S. Davis and her husband, Gary J. Davis. He is survived by his beloved wife and best friend of 60 years, Betty W. Salisbury, daughter Melissa (Aaron) Fuhrman of Newport News, and four amazing grandchildren – Kevin, Danyeal, Johnathan and Keone. He also had a bonus granddaughter, Brittany.
The family will receive friends from 2pm-4pm at Amory Funeral Home in Grafton, VA on Saturday July 25, 2026. John will receive full military honors.
Memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
