Alfred Ernst-Hermann Stember (Altmeyer Funeral Home)

Alfred Ernst-Hermann Stember, a beloved husband, cherished stepfather, adored grandfather, and friend to many, passed away peacefully on June 9, 2026, at Norfolk Sentara Heart Hospital.

Born on October 28, 1951, in the picturesque town of Osnabrück, Germany, Calo lived a life full of love, kindness, and adventure, leaving behind a legacy of warmth and compassion.

Calo was the devoted son of Hermann and Hanna Stember, who predeceased him and set the foundation for his life of integrity and grace. He was also preceded in death by his dear stepchildren, Melissa and Brandon Gomez, whom he loved deeply. His life was enriched by his marriage to Leonila “Laila” Cabuquit Walsh, whom he married on June 21, 2012, in Norfolk, Virginia. Together, Calo and Laila crafted a simple and happy life, surrounded by stepchildren and grandchildren who brought joy to their every day.

Calo is survived by his loving wife of 14 years, Laila, whose companionship and love were the hallmarks of their shared life. He leaves behind his stepchildren, Benjamin and Geraldine Cabuquit, Michelle and John Fauci, Brian Walsh Jr. and Matthew Combest, Douglas and Maria Saunders, and a host of grandchildren, including Brandon Fauci, Angelina Fauci, Bianca Cabuquit, Karl Cabuquit, Ken Cabuquit, Noah Gomez, Isabella Gomez, Dylan Saunders, Mia Saunders, and Brayden and Bayleigh Griffin. Not forgetting his extended family in Germany and his extended Filipino family, who were all dear to his heart.

Calo’s career was marked by his dedication to excellence. He fondly remembered his years working as a maître d’ at Bellapais Gardens, where he formed lasting friendships and unforgettable memories. In his later years, he served as a security officer for Securitas, where his integrity and warmth were recognized by all who worked alongside him.

A man of faith, Calo was a proud member of Cornerstone Baptist Church, where he found community and spiritual solace. His hobbies brought him immense joy—whether he was crafting beautiful beaded jewelry, woodworking, or exploring new places with his beloved Laila, his zest for life was evident to all who knew him.

Calo never met a stranger, and his open heart and gracious nature endeared him to many. His close friends, Doris Cibi Mey, Scot and Emily Perkins, Ryan and Janet Griffin, Alex Anastasopoulos, Daryl and Karen Winkler, and Julie Lazaro, were blessed by his friendship and will forever hold him in their hearts.

As we bid farewell to Calo, we take comfort in knowing that his spirit will continue to inspire and guide us. May his memory be a blessing to all who knew and loved him.
