Bertram O’Brian Hardnett, affectionately known as O’Brian or OB, passed away on April 24, 2026, in Newport News, Virginia, at the age of 40. Born on September 21, 1985, on an Air Force base in Minot, North Dakota, O’Brian’s life was a testament to kindness, devotion, and love.
O’Brian was a man of many talents and interests. He was a gifted musician, playing both the drums and tuba, especially at church, and was known as “Mr. Drum Major Sir”. Beyond his musical interests, he found joy in singing and dancing. His passion for the arts extended to photography, where he captured the beauty of nature, and painting, where he expressed his creativity. O’Brian also had a green thumb, tending to his garden with enthusiasm and care. In the kitchen, he was known for his culinary skills, especially his delicious chicken wings and of course with a Pepsi in hand. He was a true lover and follower of God and spent a lot of time volunteering at church, including maintaining the lawn and appearance of the church.
A dedicated drum major at Hampton University and a gifted athlete, O’Brian played baseball, basketball, and wrestled during his youth. However, above all else, he cherished his role as a father to his beloved children, Landon, Lathan, and Briella. His family was the center of his world, and he was a devoted husband to his wife of six years, Gabby Hardnett.
O’Brian pursued higher education with a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and was a proud member of the Rock Church of Hampton, Low Down Tubas, and the Hampton University Matching Force. Professionally, he excelled as a Marketing Manager for Wyndham Resorts, where he sold time shares with charisma and expertise. He also ran a successful business, OG’s Tasty Tables, alongside his wife showcasing his entrepreneurial spirit.
He is preceded in death by his grandparents, Franklin Hardnett and Clara Hugley Floyd; cousin, Justin Floyd; and brother-in-law, Daniel Hill. O’Brian is survived by his loving wife, Gabby; children, Landon, Lathan, and Briella; his parents, Mary Floyd and Bertram Hardnett; sister, Brandy Hardnett; nephew, Dion Russell; in-laws, Camilla “Mamita” and Dwayne “Pops” Hill; grandparents, Albert Floyd and Betty Hardnett; uncles, Bill Hardnett and Adam Floyd; aunts, Anganette Allen, Tameka Floyd, and Latanya Floyd (Moe); and a host of cousins, friends, and loved ones. His best friends, whom he considered brothers—Timothy, Bobby, Ricky, Avery, Ketron, Jamel, and Anwar—will forever cherish his memory. Pastors Paul and Joanne Tribus, an important part of his love for Christ, will also miss him dearly.
O’Brian’s name, meaning “black raven,” was fitting for a man whose presence was both striking and profound. After his passing, a black butterfly appeared to his mother and sister, a symbol of transformation and hope.
A celebration of O’Brian’s life will be held at a later date, where family and friends will gather to honor the legacy of a man who brought laughter, warmth, and love to all who knew him. His memory will live on in the hearts of those he touched, a testament to a life well-lived.
