James Ernest “Ernie” Tannehill, 71, passed away peacefully on April 6, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of faith, family, and a life lived with boundless energy.
Born on March 26, 1955, in Houston, Texas, Ernie was defined by his competitive nature and strong work ethic. A proud 1977 graduate of Louisiana Tech University, he embarked on a distinguished forty-year career in sales—a profession that suited his natural charisma and ability to connect with people.
On August 15, 1981, Ernie married the love of his life, Denise Harwell Tannehill, in Ocean Springs, Mississippi. Together, they built a beautiful life in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where they raised their two children, Jim and Tara. Upon his retirement in 2021, Ernie and Denise moved to Hertford, North Carolina, to enjoy the coastal beauty and a slower pace of life.
An avid fisherman and skilled horseman, Ernie was happiest when out in the horse barn or on the water. In retirement, his greatest joy was welcoming his four grandchildren to his home in Hertford, creating memories that will be treasured for generations.
A man of faith, Ernie was an active member of Edenton Baptist Church. He served his congregation as a Deacon and through his dedicated work on the Finance, Building and Grounds, and Communion Committees.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jimmie H. Tannehill and Bobbie Nell Poole. His memory will be carried forward by his loving wife of 44 years, Denise Harwell Tannehill; his son, James Harwell Tannehill and wife Gina of Carmel, IN; and his daughter, Tara Tannehill Berger and husband Daniel of Virginia Beach, VA. He was the world’s proudest “Grandad” to his four cherished grandchildren: Henry James Berger, John Harold Tannehill, George Thomas Berger, and Grace Kathryn Tannehill. He is also survived by his sister, Bobbie Sue Tannehill.
A celebration of Ernie’s life will be held at 10:00 am on Friday, April 17th, at Edenton Baptist Church. Ernie will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to his family, his larger-than-life personality, and his endless energy and enthusiasm. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
