Gregory “Greg” Michael Whitley, a beloved husband, son, brother, and friend, passed away on February 2, 2026, in Richmond, VA, at the age of 34. Born on June 29, 1991, in Henrico County, VA, Greg brought joy and laughter to all who knew him.
Greg was a vibrant soul with an infectious enthusiasm for life. A proud graduate of Varina High School’s Class of 2009, he continued his education at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College, earning an Associate’s Degree in Business Administration, Class of 2026. His dedication and perseverance were evident in both his academic pursuits and his professional career, where he worked as a warehouse associate for five years at Brown Distributing Company.
Greg’s interests were as diverse as they were inspiring. He was an avid fan of Legos and video games, passions that allowed him to embrace his inner child throughout his adult life. Greg cherished spending time with his loving wife, Mara, exploring craft breweries and cideries. Their adventures together were filled with laughter, love, and camaraderie.
A social butterfly by nature, Greg’s friendly and outgoing demeanor made him a magnet for lasting friendships. He fondly remembered his days in Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts, experiences that cultivated his love for community and service. As a trumpet player in his high school marching band, Greg’s musical talent was a source of pride and joy, echoing through the lives of those he touched.
A lifelong Washington Commanders and Penn State fan, Greg’s passion for sports was shared with family and friends, creating treasured memories at games and gatherings. He adored his niece Raelynn, always ensuring she felt loved and supported. Greg was also a devoted pet lover, doting on his cherished cats and dogs.
Greg is preceded in death by his grandparents, Frank and Emma Whitley,Peter and Mary Page Granzeau, and his uncle, Ronald Whitley. He is survived by a loving family: his wife, Mara Whitley; his parents, Frank and Emily Whitley; his brother, David Whitley; his parents-in-law, Rev. Joel and Mindy Benson; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Adam and Ashley Benson; his beloved niece, Raelynn; and a host of dear family, friends, and colleagues who will forever hold him in their hearts.
Gregory Michael Whitley leaves behind a legacy of kindness, joy, and unwavering love. He will be deeply missed by all who had the honor of knowing him.
