Robert Roy Vaughan (Bucktrout Funeral Home)

Robert lived a life defined by devotion to family, intellectual rigor, integrity, and a deep appreciation for the arts.

Robert Roy Vaughan, 89, died peacefully with his daughters by his side on February 2, 2026, in Williamsburg, Virginia. Born on January 4, 1937, in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, he was the beloved son of Roy and Iva Vaughan. He spent the majority of his life in Bethesda, Maryland, where he raised his family, before retiring to Williamsburg, VA.

Robert was a proud graduate of the United States Naval Academy, Class of 1958, where he studied alongside John McCain. He went on to earn a Master’s in Mathematics from the University of Missouri and later completed his MBA at the Sloan School of Management at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology—academic achievements that reflected both his intellectual rigor and his lifelong commitment to learning.

He served as a Lieutenant in the United States Navy before beginning a distinguished career in the nonprofit sector. He spent the majority of his professional life as Chief Financial Officer at the Center for Naval Analyses (CNA), where his sharp mind and steady judgment earned the respect of colleagues and peers. He concluded his career at the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), bringing the same thoughtful leadership to one of the nation’s most respected scientific institutions.

Beyond his professional life, Robert embraced the world with curiosity and joy. He was a longtime member of the Edgemoor Club, where he played tennis and enthusiastically supported the swim team during his daughters’ younger years. He also enjoyed golf, travel, and a lifelong appreciation for ballet, opera, and classical music—interests that reflected his refined spirit and deep love of culture.

In retirement, Robert developed a passion for gourmet cooking. For those fortunate enough to gather around his table, his meals were more than food—they were acts of care, celebration, and love. At this time, he also became a collector of contemporary Russian Realist painting, drawn to the genre’s beauty and quiet intensity.

Robert was preceded in death by his wife, Virtue Vaughan, to whom he was married for 44 years until her death in 2003. He later shared 22 years with his partner, Anne Harrison-Clark, who died only two weeks before him.

He is survived by his daughters, Virtue Byrd (David Byrd) and Tris Anne DeSalvio (Joseph DeSalvio), and by his cherished grandchildren: Brian Byrd, Parker DeSalvio, Grayson DeSalvio, and Beckett DeSalvio. Above all else, Robert was a loving husband and father, devoted to his family. His steady presence, intellect, and unwavering support will be deeply missed.

A private, family-only memorial service will be held on February 21, 2026, at Parklawn Memorial Gardens, where Robert will be laid to rest beside his beloved wife, Virtue. In Robert’s memory, the family encourages time spent with loved ones, acts of kindness, and support of the arts.
